Why your quote may be higher than you expected
Butternut Box prices its recipes individually rather than charging one plan price. The default selection the wizard builds for you includes premium recipes, and the four-recipe mix we sampled sat about £0.25 a day above a base-recipe plan for a mid-size dog. Our figures keep the defaults in place, because that is what someone who does not edit their menu is quoted. Swapping to base recipes brings the daily price down.
The other reason is the starter box. The headline discount applies to your first two boxes, then the price steps up to the ongoing rate, which is the figure in the table above. For a 14kg adult that ongoing rate was £3.26 a day when we sampled it in July 2026, or about £99 a month and roughly £1,190 across a full year at the standard price.
How the portions compare
For a 14kg adult dog the wizard built a 396g daily portion. That is closely matched to Different Dog, the other gently cooked brand we track, so the price difference between those two is a genuine price difference rather than one brand serving less food. Across the wider fresh market portion sizes for one dog can differ by 10 to 20%, which is why price per kilo tells you very little and price per day for your own dog tells you almost everything.
Gently cooked food is the priciest format we track, and portion size is the main reason. You are paying to cook, portion, chill and ship food that is mostly water. Raw and dehydrated plans work out lower for most dogs, which is what the list above shows for a mid-size one.
