How to cancel Butternut Box

Butternut's help pages and terms read on 6 October 2026

You cancel Butternut Box from your own account, online or in the app, and Butternut doesn't charge a fee for it. The button is called Pause Subscription, and Butternut's help centre says stopping your plan that way is the same as cancelling: it ends all future orders and payments. Do it before the cut-off for your next box, which is usually 11pm two days before delivery.

We haven't cancelled a plan ourselves, so what follows is how Butternut describes it, with links to its own pages so you can check the wording. Its pages are always the ones that count.

The steps, as Butternut gives them

  1. Log in to your Butternut account, on the website or in the app.
  2. Open your profile icon at the top right and choose Account details.
  3. Click Pause Subscription.
  4. Answer the short questions about why you're stopping. Butternut may also show some support options or an offer first, which you can accept or dismiss.
  5. Click Stop my subscription. Your dashboard then shows the account as paused.
  6. Check for the confirmation email. Butternut always sends one when an account is stopped, and says that if it doesn't arrive, the account is still active.

Why it says pause rather than cancel

Butternut keeps your account open after you stop, so you can come back, or order a one-off box or treats without restarting a plan. That is why the button says pause. Its help centre is clear that the effect is the same as cancelling: no more boxes are sent and no more payments are taken.

The cut-off for your next box

Butternut's terms set the cut-off at 11pm two days before your delivery date, and your delivery reminder email gives the exact time for each box. Stop before it and the box isn't placed or charged. Stop after it and that box is still charged and sent.

Once a box has been charged and dispatched, Butternut says it can't refund it or take the food back, even if you refuse the delivery. That follows from the law on food that goes off quickly: the usual 14 days to change your mind doesn't cover it. Food that arrives faulty is different, and Butternut's terms ask you to email them within 7 working days of the box arriving.

If you're still on the trial box

Butternut takes payment for the trial box when you sign up, and can't cancel or change it after that. The second box follows automatically, 7 or 14 days after the trial box depending on your plan, so if you are undecided, stop or delay that second box before its cut-off. If the problem is that your dog isn't keen, Butternut's Fussy Eater Guarantee covers the trial box: tell Butternut within 10 days of the box arriving and it will send new recipes to try or tailored advice. How that compares with the other four brands' terms.

If you only need a break

You don't have to stop the plan to skip a box. On your dashboard, open your next box, choose Edit delivery and pick a later date from the calendar. Your delivery rhythm stays the same from the new date: on a 14-day plan, boxes then follow every 14 days after it. Only the next box can be moved this way; for anything further ahead, Butternut asks you to contact its customer team.

If it's the cost

Butternut's own help centre suggests some ways to bring the bill down before stopping altogether: a smaller pouch size, less frequent deliveries, leaving out the recipes that carry a surcharge, or mixing Butternut with food you already have. What Butternut Box costs once the intro offer ends is on our cost page. If you'd rather switch, the brands below come out cheaper on our figures, and our cheaper alternatives to Butternut Box prices every brand against it at each size we re-check weekly.

Coming back later

You can restart a stopped plan from your account later, or place a one-off order without restarting it. Butternut's terms say a restarted plan may be priced differently from the one you left, so check the price again before you rejoin. Our record of Butternut Box's prices shows whether they have moved since we started checking.

Questions

Does it cost anything to cancel Butternut Box?

Butternut Box doesn't charge a fee to cancel. What matters is timing: stop your plan before the cut-off for your next box, usually 11pm two days before delivery, or that box is still charged and sent.

Is pausing Butternut Box the same as cancelling?

Pausing Butternut Box is the same as cancelling, according to its help centre. The button in your account reads "Pause Subscription", and stopping your plan through it ends all future orders and payments. Your account stays open, so you can come back or place a one-off order later.

Can I cancel a Butternut Box trial box?

A Butternut Box trial box can't be cancelled once it is paid for, and Butternut takes that payment when you sign up. You can stop or delay every box after it, and the second box follows automatically 7 or 14 days after the trial, so the cut-off for that second box is the one to watch.

Can I get a refund on a Butternut Box that has already been sent?

Butternut Box says that once a box has been charged and dispatched, it can't refund it or take the food back, even if the delivery is refused at the door. Food that arrives faulty is different, and Butternut's terms ask you to email them within 7 working days of the box arriving.
